All libraries are critically important, but school libraries might be even more vital. Children that become accustomed to a school library environment, at an early age, as part of a curriculum that stresses reading, and library use, are given the most valuable tool in how to empower themselves for life. They learn how to find answers on their own. They learn how to research and problem solve. A well equipped school library levels the field for children that might not have access to books or computers at home. A school library can enrich the vocabulary of a child whose parents don’t speak english at home. A school library can offer enrichment even as cultural programs are slashed. A school library can be an oasis for children that can’t study at home.

Librarians engender life long learning habits. School librarians are often one of the few technology experts in small school districts, and essentially the library is often the heart of the school.

Mom was a school librarian. She shared her love of books with us and with all kids. She encouraged kids to read and to collect books. She read to little kids and helped teens with their research. Librarians are not obsolete! Neither are libraries! SAVE BOTH!

With 19% of high school graduates unable to read, bringing more qualified librarians into schools will only make the situation better. What kind of a future do we want to provide, for our kids, for our grand-kids, and for us? Let’s make the US a leader in education and literacy once again!
