PETITION: End the decimation of school libraries: Our students deserve better

Support effective school libraries in Minnesota: every school has a full-time licensed librarian, a full-time support staff member and adequate funding to purchase up-to-date and relevant books for students.

The link between strong school library programs and student achievement is well documented. Over the past 20 years, numerous studies have shown that elementary schools with at least one full-time certified teacher-librarian performed better on state tests.

Without a strong foundation of literacy and access to books as children, our students will grow up contributing to higher rates of illiteracy among adults in the country. Adult illiteracy rates are estimated to cost US tax payers hundreds of billions of dollars each year and illiteracy in adults can be connected to almost every socio-economic issue in the country.

We, the undersigned, urge our state legislators and school boards to mandate and fund fully staffed school libraries in every K-12 school.

We believe that every student deserves access to a library powered by a licensed School Library Media Specialist and a full-time Library Paraprofessional.
