It would be the biggest gift we could make to the future of education in Nevada if every child, regardless of how well funded their local schools are, could have access to the amazing resources of an up-to-date school library staffed with a certified school librarian. Studies across the country have shown that school children learn better and have higher rates of academic achievement when they have a school librarian in their lives. School librarians should be working every day with our kids across Nevada to teach information and news literacy skills, and learning across the curriculum. But sadly, from Elko to Esmeralda Counties and to Clark and Washoe Counties, not enough certified school librarians are there to make the most-positive impact on student achievement. With a school librarian, small and rural schools - and our big cities and counties - can solve real problems in student achievement and learning.
If you think it is time for kids across Nevada to have the same advantages, please sign this petition to the Nevada state legislature.
Last legislative session, the state Senate considered SB 143, a bill that would require all schools in Nevada to have at least one certified school librarian on staff, and to provide some new equity between schools and districts for collections and programs. Unfortunately, the bill did not advance to the full state Senate this session. Help us build support for this idea in the next legislative session so that Nevada school library stakeholders can re-introduce the bill. If you live in Nevada, please sign this petition today. If you don’t, please share this link on your own social media to encourage others to sign.
Every elected official in Carson City needs to hear about how certified school librarians will improve our schools. Please sign and send your message today.
