On Thursday, October 27, the New Jersey State Assembly will consider A4196, a bipartisan Information Literacy bill that will ensure that students across New Jersey learn the vital skills they need to achieve academic success and make informed decisions. Both the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee and the Education Committee have approved the bill after the state Senate passed its version earlier in the session (S588). It is time for the full Assembly to consider and pass A4169. We need your support today to move this legislation forward this session. Please contact your Assembly Member today to ask them to YES on this bill.
Information Literacy is at the core of their ability to be civically engaged, socially aware, and ethically centered in a very turbulent media and political world. The New Jersey Association of School Librarians (NJASL) is supporting A4169 and its companion bill S588 to create new statewide Information Literacy standards in New Jersey schools.

A4169 / S588 is a smart legislative approach that would create a new standard for students to understand and use information sources and evaluate the quality of information, all within an ethical framework. The bill clearly states that certified school librarians are needed to lead this effort.
We’re asking you today to help move this Information Literacy legislation forward by contacting members of the Assembly.
As our schools are coming through the COVID-19 pandemic and a very disrupted social and political time in our communities, these information literacy skills are more important than ever. The bill’s key goals are creating standards so students can learn to evaluate information critically and competently, recognize relevant primary and secondary information, and distinguish between facts, points of view, and opinions. Please join the New Jersey Association of School Librarians (NJASL) in support of A4169 / S588 (2022) by contacting your member of the New Jersey Assembly today. It’s important that they hear about how important this legislation is for New Jersey students.
Thanks to sponsors Assemblymembers Daniel Benson, Pamela Lampitt, and Mila Jasey for sponsoring and Herb Conaway, JR. and Sadaf Jaffer for co-sponsoring, this is a powerful and important opportunity for all New Jersey students and families.
