We are excited to announce that the campaign to keep school librarians from being “optional” in Iowa State Senate Bill 1190 in Iowa was wildly successful and the language was removed from the bill. Read more here
School Librarians in Iowa are vitally important to a child’s education, discovery, independent learning, and development. Teacher-Librarians have been “required” in all Iowa schools for a generation - for exactly that reason. But now, Senate Study Bill 1190 proposes to make school librarians “optional”. This is a terrible idea. We are joining our partners at the Iowa Library Association and the Iowa Association of School Librarians in opposing any erosion to education in Iowa. Join us today to take action against SSB 1190. Please email your state senator to let them know you oppose changing teacher-librarians from “required” to “optional”
Every $10 we receive helps us put petitions like this in front of 1,000 more Americans to support school librarians.
Please consider making a $10-$25 donation today!
It is more important than ever to have a qualified teacher-librarian in each school. Their role in student instruction and supporting the curriculum is well known. We don’t understand why this SSB 1190 has been introduced. And school librarians are working every day across our state - and in your local school district - to ensure that our students succeed. Please let your state senator know how you feel by sending an email today.
Education today is vastly different than it was twenty or thirty years ago. Good school leaders know that the library is the largest classroom in the school. Please help keep school librarians as “required” in schools across Iowa. Without them, that “largest classroom” won’t be there to help all kids learn. Thanks for taking action today!
