The school library is the largest classroom in the school impacting the greatest number of students yet Evergreen Public Schools in Vancouver, WA has recently announced the removal of all teacher librarians from middle schools and high schools.
With potential budget reductions of $19.1 million for the 2023-24 school year the district has stated their intention to structure the cuts to keep any impact as far away from students as possible, and to run all decisions through an equity lens.

Eliminating teacher librarians directly impacts students, especially our most vulnerable. Teacher librarians actively defend and support our most marginalized students. They cultivate and provide access to books, technology, and experiences that allow these students to be seen, valued, understood, and welcomed in their school community.
Studies have shown that schools with fully funded school libraries perform higher on standardized tests and contribute significantly to student achievement in the classroom and beyond.
