D.C. Increases Education Budget!
We’d like to thank you for your advocacy and signatures on our online petition to support Washington D.C. school librarians. Mayor Muriel Bowser released her School Year 2020-21 budget on Monday, it includes a 3% increase in funding for public education. Please see the Washington Post article.
Please, make a donation to support school librarians across the United States.
Every $10 we raise helps us reach 1,000 more people like you.
Thanks to your advocacy, the total number of librarians remained level; however, several schools will see their library programs cut. These cuts are largely concentrated in communities serving high numbers of students who struggle in reading and ELA and in high schools.
On behalf of DCPS librarians, we would also like to thank the Washington Teachers Union, EveryLibrary, Black Caucus of the American Library Association and the American Association of School Librarians for their support over the last couple of months. We will begin advocating for legislation to require a Full-Time Library Media Specialist in every DC School in the coming months. We hope you’ll join us in this next phase of our action to ensure #DCPSatHOME students receive instruction from certified librarians.
