The books and resources in the school library not only support the curriculum but also allow children to learn and grow on their own.

Children who don’t read, don’t succeed. Children who don’t have libraries, and librarians to introduce them to reading, don’t read. And children who do not learn how to research their world through books, will be lost without computer access.

Libraries are a top priority in schools. Once the library is gone, where’s the sanctuary? Where’s the comfortable and quiet place to read? Schools should include libraries, which are functioning examples of the clean, well-lit space. It’s an important social tool: being able to chill back and exist in real time, study with a book and reflect…off screen. Real time allows contemplation, absorption of—or relief from—the miles of data the modern student is exposed to every waking hour. Once the library is gone, once that librarian has been deemed “irrelevant”, we all lose and the whole, beautiful arrangement is history. We should support our own imperative which is to raise competent, coherent people. Let’s keep the libraries intact, funded, and well-staffed, so it’s possible.

More than ever students need the skills school librarians provide.
