The most important thing we must do is provide our children the best learning experiences and tools that are available. There is no excuse for continually cutting funding and programs for education. School libraries and trained librarians are essential now, more than ever, as we face the reality of the damage we’ve suffered, and continue to suffer, from Covid 19 and the current state of our union. We must not let our children down. In fact we all need to work toward improving all aspects of education and invest in both our children, our teachers, our tools and our facilities. We are lagging way behind other developed countries. It’s shameful and inexcusable. Funds for education should never be cut, and should be our top priority.

The library system is the very heart of information not only for teachers but for students to expand on their education ideas.

School libraries are needed more than ever in this world of misinformation and economic disparity. It is my guess that administrators who want to close their school libraries are short-sighted and uninformed as to the purpose and potential of effective library programs in the lives of their students.

I am a 3rd grade teacher and my school librarian, Missy Cornelius, does so much more for students and staff than what most people would realize but I experience each day. She displays a wide range of books relevant to the current topics around us. She also organizes, with other librarians and teachers in our area a reading competition twice a year for elementary through high school students to enhance their love of reading. She uses profits from her book sales to buy new books for students but also invites well known authors, illustrators and others to teach students about their experiences with reading, writing and bringing characters to life. Lastly, Mrs. Cornelius organizes a “One-Book Club” for all the students and staff in our building to read together. Students are excited to read each section at night and discover the answer to the question of the day. I am sure Mrs. Cornelius is not the only librarian in the state doing these activities for her students but she exudes so much passion for reading while doing it. Please save our school librarians throughout the state and beyond.
